Razia Sultan (r. 1236–1240) was the only woman to rule the Delhi Sultanate in her own name. Her father named her heir, her brother’s reign collapsed, and she took the throne with support from the people of Delhi, then spent four years managing nobles who never accepted a woman at the top. She ruled, rode with her army, issued coins in her own name, and was overthrown. This book follows her rise and fall, and how later writers turned her into a warning, a heroine or a romance.
