A towering figure of the movement of independence in sub-continent, Abdul Samad Khan Achakzai's political career spanned the colonial and post-colonial eras. He had great love for his mother tongue Pashto and devised a phonetic script, which brought its alphabet into conformity with its phonology and eased its adaption to the modern demands of printing. He is reverentially remembered as "Khan Shaheed" the Martyr Khan.
