A towering figure of the movement of independence in sub-continent, Abdul Samad Khan Achakzai's political career spanned the colonial and post-colonial eras. His progressive politics were national-democratic, anti-imperialist and anti-feudal. He advocated for democracy, civil rights and the rule of law and envisioned a singlePashtun province, which would incorporate all of the contiguous Pashtun-inhabited areas east of the Durand Line from Chitral to Bolan with Pashto as the working language and medium of instructions. Altogether, he was sentenced to imprisonment for 40 years of his 66 year life, a time he used to gain academic credentials and pen most of this autobiography Mullah (cleric) by training, Abdul Samad Khan Achakzai was also a literary figure, who remained editor of his own newspaper Istiqlal (sovereignty). He had great love for his mother tongue Pashto and devised a phonetic script, which brought its alphabet into conformity with its phonology and eased its adaption to the modern demands of printing. He is reverentially remembered as "Khan Shaheed" the Martyr Khan.
